How it works
In a world that is complex and ever-changing, communities need leaders who approach challenges with wisdom, compassion, and practical insight. Theological Field Education (TFE) helps students develop these qualities through hands-on ministry experience that complements their classroom learning.
Students in the Master of Divinity (M.Div.) program complete three TFE units, while those in the Master of Arts in Public and Pastoral Leadership (MA-PPL) program complete two units. These transformative experiences are tuition-free and do not count toward degree credit hours.
TFE placements are student-selected and approved in consultation with the Director of Theological Field Education, ensuring each placement is meaningful, personalized, and designed to foster reflection, skill-building, and spiritual growth.

Do I have to do TFE?
Three units of TFE (TFE-E: Exploration, TFE -P: Leadership in Practice and TFE-FC: Leadership in Faith Community) are required for the MDiv degree; Two units of TFE (TFE-E: Exploration and TFE-P: Leadership in Practice) are required for the MA-PPL degree.Do I register for TFE?
Yes, just as you would for another course in any other term.I’m taking PT551 “Pastoral Identity and Practice” which includes supervision. Does this count for TFE units?
No. This course includes supervised experience arranged by the instructor of that course and is separate from the TFE credits.If a conflict emerges in my field education, what do I do?
If any part of the teaching, learning or evaluation process breaks down, the Director of Theological Field Education must be notified immediately. Upon notification, a consultative process will be initiated to resolve the differences or to terminate the field placement agreement.
